After the locations of the rails were discovered, the Restoration Team needed to uncover the historic chair rail profiles (the shape of the moldings). While this seems like an impossible task due to the fact that the actual rails had long been destroyed, the Restoration Team knew that the profiles could have potentially survived intact on the sides of the trim. The profiles would have survived because after the chair rails were installed they, and the surrounding woodwork, were painted. After painting the trim a negative image of the profile was created where the chair rails abutted the trim. When the rails were removed in ca. 1845, this negative image was then encapsulated under multiple layers of paint.
