To uncover the profiles it was necessary to remove the post ca. 1845 paint that was applied over the Madison-era chair rail profiles. In order to ensure that the process of removing the paint did not also destroy the very profiles that the team was trying to recover, historic paint conservators were brought in. The conservators used specialized solvents to slowly and carefully strip away each paint layer until the profiles were visible.

The paint stripping process. First the approximate location of the embedded profile was determined, second a chemical paint stripper was applied and third the stripper was very slowly scraped off to reveal the Madison-era chair rail profile.
