The profile found on the chimneypiece also provided the team with a valuable clue as to how the chair rail was installed in the room. Specifically, it told the Restoration Team that the surbase section stopped, or was "returned," before it reached the edge of the trim. This was actually a common way to install a chair rail in 18th century Virginia but without having both the profile from the chimneypiece as well as the profile from the window trim, the restoration team would not have had the evidence to justify the detail.
