Because the cramp was identical to the ca. 1797 cramp found on the Large Bedroom fireplace, and because cramps were only used to hold pieces of stone, it provided the last piece of evidence needed to prove that the fireplace was faced with stone in ca. 1797.  Additionally, because President Madison only used Whitehaven sandstone in the ca. 1797 section of Montpelier, it was clear to the Restoration Team that Whitehaven stone should be used to face the restored fireplace in the Dining Room.
