A second, more detailed sketch of a section of the fence was also found.  This sketch, made by John Gadsby Chapman (1808-1889), features a gate found in the fence near Montpelier's Temple.  However, these documentary resources did not provide enough evidence to produce an accurate design for the fence, and without the months of excavations, investigations, and analysis made by the archaeologists at Montpelier the fence could not have been reconstructed.  After the archaeological excavations were completed, the archaeologists were able to locate the exact position and size for many of the posts shown in the de Neuville watercolor.  More amazingly, they were also able to identify the type of wood used for the posts and even uncovered nail evidence that helped to prove that the fence dated to ca. 1812.
