While archaeological evidence uncovered by Montpelier’s archaeologists would irrefutably answer questions relating to the fence’s exact location, layout, and even approximate date, it did not uncover physical evidence that supported the accuracy of several important details shown in the de Neuville watercolor.  Therefore before a design for the reconstructed fence could be developed, it was necessary to consult other period images of Montpelier and review period sources on the construction and finishing of fences in the late 18th and early 19th century.  The additional research revealed that the de Neuville watercolor was indeed an accurate depiction of the fence.  Additionally, the investigation also provided information that helped to illuminate Madison’s motivations for creating Montpelier's ca. 1812 landscape.
