Once the design for the shutters was completed they were reconstructed out of heart pine, which was the same type of wood used for the Madison-era shutters.  The shutters were then painted green to match the bright green color specified by Dr. Buck and installed on the Mansion.  Because the reconstructed shutters are mounted the same way they were in ca. 1812, they now also operate just as they did in Madison's time.
