The size of each floorboard was found by mapping out the location of the nail holes on each of the joists. Using this information the new floorboards were then milled out of reclaimed heart pine to match the size of the original ca. 1764 board. The ca. 1764 nails holes also provided clear evidence that the floorboards were "face nailed." Face nailing involves driving a nail through the top, or face, of the board instead of through the edge of a board as is more common today.
