Angled fireplaces were fairly common in the 18th century and they continued to be built throughout the early 19th century. Their popularity was based on the fact that they allowed fireplaces in two rooms to be serviced by a single chimney stack, thereby saving the owner the expense of building two stacks. Other examples can be found at Salubria in Culpeper, Virginia and George Washington's Mount Vernon in Fairfax County, Virginia.
