The evidence of just such a scuttle was found in the southwestern corner of the closet’s ceiling when fragments of two pairs of thin strips of wood, called rails, were found secured to the joists by ca. 1764 hand-wrought nails.  The wooden rails would have been partially hidden by the plaster ceiling and supported a sliding door that was pushed back along the rails to access the opening into the garret.
