The evidence of just such a scuttle was found n the southwestern corner of the closet’s ceiling when fragments of two-pairs of thin strips of wood, called rails, were found secured to the joists by ca. 1764 hand-wrought nails. The wooden rails would have been partially hidden by the plaster ceiling and supported a sliding door that was pushed back along the rails to access the opening into the garret.
