Ultimately it was determined that even though the room dated to ca. 1797, the existing ca. 1812 chimneypiece was the first one to be installed.  This meant that the room did not have a chimneypiece from ca. 1797 to ca. 1812 and the patch of whitewash had been applied sometime between those dates.
