When the location of the original Madison-era locks were discovered, additional physical evidence was recovered by carefully scraping away the later paints found covering the location where the locks or bolts had originally been installed.  After all of the post-Madison paint was scraped away, a ghost outline of the Madison lock, rosette, or escutcheon was often discovered.
