The evolution and refinement of flooring is also clearly seen at Montpelier.  While the floors of the ca. 1764 section of the cellar were formed from packed clay, the ca. 1797 cellar floor was covered with wooden boards and the floor in the later ca. 1812 cellar kitchen additions were paved with bricks, which were even more highly valued.
