Since the goal of the restoration was to restore Montpelier back to its ca. 1812 appearance, the primary task for the Restoration Team was to determine how the wainscot was installed in ca. 1812. The first step in this process was to create an AutoCAD drawing detailing the existing pieces of wainscot. The drawing was then marked to show where rails, stiles, panels and caps (the four elements that make up the wainscot) had been cut down or enlarged.  This drawing provided the Team with an idea of how the wainscot had been altered in both ca. 1812 and ca. 1901.
