The nail holes found on the baseboards, created when the board was nailed into place by the Madisons’ carpenters, also provided important evidence for determining the original location of the baseboard fragments.  If the holes found in the baseboards matched the nail holes found on the surviving Madison-era framing or in the nailers, then the Restoration Team could be positive they had the right location.
