While the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, which was designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1787, is potentially the first double-height, classically correct portico in the state, it fronted a public building.  Woodlands, the ca. 1786 built for William Hamilton in Philadelphia boasts what was perhaps the first two-story, columned portico in the United States, but Madison’s was unique to Virginia when it was built in ca. 1797.  Furthermore, the Portico at Woodlands is found on the secondary garden elevation while Montpelier’s is attached to the house's primary façade.
