Further evidence was found when the post-Madison stucco was taken off of the columns.  After the columns' brickwork was exposed, the point where the ca. 1845 masons started to chisel down the existing brickwork was quickly found.  By extension, this transition from smooth, undamaged brickwork to the rough, chisel-scarred brickwork clearly marked where the Madison-era column bases had been located.
