Finally, the columns were whitewashed to complete the reconstruction of the Madison-era finish.  As a result of the restoration the columns appear once again as President Madison would have seen them.  Instead of the bulky, thick render that obscured the columns' fine details that was found on them prior to the restoration, they now feature a much thinner plaster and so the columns’ moldings once again appear crisp and refined.
