After the whitewash had cured, the masons applied a thin coat of brown plaster to smooth over the cracked, uneven bricks that had either broken during earlier renovations or deteriorated with time.  The next layer was composed of a thin, white plaster that matched the Madison-era plaster found surviving on columns.
