In this case the Restoration Team also knew that the ca. 1812 composition ornaments were made by a Washington, DC craftsman named George Andrews.  To restore the lost pieces of composition ornament, the Team had two choices: find a photo that showed the missing ornaments or find an example of a similar ornament at another historic site.  While the Team did resort to reproducing an Andrews ornament found at another house to restore the Drawing Room’s chair rail, in this case the first step was to search Montpelier’s archive to see if a historic photograph could be found that revealed what the missing ornaments looked like.
