A particularly large rat's nest was found in the east wall of the Large Bedroom.  This nest was uncovered when the wall was being investigated to determine when it was built.  Eventually the wall was found to date to ca. 1797, but what was found inside the wall turned out to be much more interesting.  When the investigators removed the ca. 1797 baseboard they found the space between the studs was filled with a massive assortment of plaster keys and other materials.  Once all of the material was out of the wall, they discovered that they had uncovered a large rat's nest.  Mixed within the nest's plaster keys and pieces of wood were samples of fabric, wallpaper, and paper.  While these were important fragments, it was impossible to determine the approximate date of the pieces by looking at them and so the Team had no idea which ones dated to the Madison era at Montpelier.
