Using these tools, Dr. Buck was able to identify two of the wallpapers from the nest that most likely dated from the Madison era.  Even though only small scraps of the papers survived, it was possible to tell that both featured multicolored, possibly floral prints. Because rats would often scour an entire house for nesting materials, it is hard to know exactly where these wallpapers were originally installed.  However, using a process of elimination and consulting with wallpaper experts on where specific types of papers were hung, it was possible to narrow down the list to two or three rooms.  These rooms include the Dining Room, Mr. Madison’s Room, and the Entry.
