After the North Cellar Stair was reconstructed it once again served as a connection between the cellar’s service spaces and the higher status first floor rooms.  The success of the stair's reconstruction was largely due to the Restoration Team’s efforts to record Montpelier’s entire evolution and not just the changes that were directly relevant to the Restoration.  While it often involved extra work on part of the already busy Restoration Team, without knowing the house’s complete architectural history it would have been impossible to correctly analyze much of the Madison-era evidence they uncovered.
