The purpose of this diminutive doorway is unknown, but it was possibly used to bring coal or wood into the kitchen to use in the stove.  When the duPonts subdivided this space they removed the stove and plastered over the thimble.  During the investigation that preceded the restoration, the investigators excavated the plaster found over the fireplace and around the small doorway.
