When the plaster was removed it was very clear where the ca.1812 fireplace was located.  It was also clear that the arch over the small doorway was actually an original Madison-era feature.  Additionally, another, smaller, flue that connected to the main fireplace’s flue was found towards the back of the arched opening's top.  What could this feature have been used for?
