With the wing decks restored back to their distinctive ca. 1812 appearance, Montpelier regained one of its major design characteristics.  However, from a visitor's perspective, the house also regained an important site to overlook the landscape surrounding the Mansion.  By being able to see the grounds around the Mansion, including the slave quarters found in the South Yard, visitors to Montpelier can now see how the ca. 1812 landscape was divided into defined segments and that each segment served a distinct function.
