However, the most important piece of evidence by far was not found in or on the Mansion.  When several of the restoration carpenters were making repairs to the Montpelier Estate's ca. 1881 bowling alley, they discovered that the joists used to support the floor in the ca. 1901 north wing had strange, V-shaped grooves plowed into them.
