To discover how the hearth was finished the Restoration Team used two main sources of information.  The first was the surviving pieces of the ca. 1797 hearth framing and the ca. 1812 setting bed.  The second was a fragment of stone uncovered by the archaeologists in the cellar directly below the hearth in Mr. Madison's Room.
