To restore the hearth, mason Ray Canetti first identified the marble as Carrara marble from Italy.  Because the Carrara quarry is still active and is still producing stone similar to what Madison ordered, it was possible for Canetti to order nine slabs from the quarry that would be almost identical to those used by President Madison.  After the carpenters repaired the floor around the hearth, Canetti cut the marble slabs to fit and installed them on a new lime-mortar setting bed.
