The completed partition in the ca. 1764 cellar provides visitors with a clear idea of what cellars looked like in the mid-18th century.  As demonstrated by the rough texture of the riven clapboards, these rooms were not nearly as finished as the more refined public spaces found on the first floor.  However, later in the 18th and early-19th centuries, as shown by the ca. 1797 cellar and the ca. 1812 cellar kitchens, even these secondary spaces would come to feature more finished, smoother materials.  This change reflects a general refinement of all materials, architectural and otherwise, that takes place throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
