Incredibly, once the ca. 1880s brick infill had been removed, a small sliver of the Drawing Room surround's missing backband was found re-used as a shim. While the shim only retained a very small portion of the molding that formed the backband, it was still large enough to be conclusively matched to the backband found on the Dining Room fireplace. Because the pattern of the Dining Room surround's egg-and-dart backband was distinctive, having the two examples match was the final piece of evidence needed to prove that the two surrounds dated to the same period.
