To determine the location of the doorways in the partitions, the Restoration Team looked at the spacing of the lap mortises.  Normally whenever the Team noticed that two stud mortises were farther apart than the other studs used to frame a wall, they suspected that a door had been installed between the studs.  However, in the ca. 1797 cellar the studs were found installed much farther apart then the ca. 1797 studs found in the first and second floor partitions.  So, in this instance the Team reversed the process and located the door locations by identifying where the spacing of two stud mortises was narrower than normal.  The reason that the studs in the cellar were farther apart was due to the fact that the partitions were covered with wide, horizontal boards instead of lath and plaster.  Since these boards were stronger then the lath and plaster, fewer studs were needed to support them.

The narrower spacing of the studs on the left hand side of the photo revealed the location of a doorway.
