Partial evidence for the stair’s architectural trim was found on both the walls and on the newel post fragment found in the ca. 1848 pilaster.  While the newel post fragment was by far the most important piece of the puzzle, the evidence found on the walls allowed the Restoration Team to accurately determine the height of the stair's railing.  By using the small nailers found on the walls the Restoration Team was able to determine how high to install the chair rail that ran up the stair.  Knowing how high the stair’s chair rail was significant to the design of the stair because the chair rails were almost always installed at the same height as the stair’s railing in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.  By determining the height of the ca. 1797 chair rail, the Restoration Team was able to also determine the height of the stair's railing.
