As it turns out, the Investigation Team involved in the Restoration's feasibility study discovered the profile for the  wing cornice before the Restoration even started.  Because the researchers knew that it was, and still is, very difficult for painters to not get at least some paint onto the brickwork when a molding abutts against a brick wall, they searched for a paint ghost where the wing cornice hit the main block in ca. 1812.  Just as they expected, when the researchers removed the stucco from where the Madison cornice had been located, they discovered a faint outline of the cornice on the brickwork.
