After it was installed and painted, the reconstructed cornice was painted to match the ca. 1812 paint color found on surviving Madison-era trim. The cornice is a major exterior architectural element and without a painter making a careless mistake almost 200 years ago, Montpelier’s restoration would not have been nearly as successful.
