It was also discovered that the six-strand, hemp sash cord found when the sidelights were removed was the original cord installed in by President Madison’s carpenters in ca. 1812.  Importantly this was the only piece of Madison-era sash cord found during the restoration and so reproduction cords for the other windows in the house were made to match.

A ca. 1812 lead sash weight attached to its original ca. 1812 sash cord.  The initials "J.N." stamped onto the sash weight stand for "John Neilson," one of the two carpenters who led Montpelier's ca. 1812 renovation and expansion.
