Furthermore, when the Restoration Team reviewed the 1812 Buildings Price Book for Alexandria, VA, they found that it provided a standardized guide for the cost of many architectural elements.  The price book also revealed that historic carpenters often charged by the linear foot, meaning that the taller and wider chimneypiece was, the more it would cost.  When the size of the missing chimneypieces found in the North Wing Room was compared to the size of the chimneypiece in Large Bedroom, it was discovered that the North Wing room mantel was slightly wider and taller.  Therefore, the fairly small difference in size would have probably accounted for the small difference in price.
