In some cases, as with the ca. 1764 southeastern doorframe in the South Passage, the Restoration Team discovered that some of the assumed "missing" Madison-period elements were actually still in the Mansion but just not in their Madison-era locations.  As it turns out, during the ca. 1901 renovations the duPonts had taken great care to reuse many of the Madison-era architectural elements. Because of the importance of the reused Madison-era doors, windows, and even chimneypieces, a detailed search for these elements was undertaken during the investigation that preceded the restoration.
