Fortunately, once the demolition started evidence for how the stair was constructed and trimmed slowly came to light.  Construction details were found on the girt that framed the north side of the stair.  In this instance a plaster ghost and header mortise were found that revealed exactly where the stair well ended in ca. 1764.
