The finish of the railing in the photo represents the ca. 1812 paint colors (the graining for the rail was matched from a sample of graining found on a surviving fragment of the ca. 1797 stair).  The stair is also part of the regular tour of Montpelier and visitors use the reconstructed stair daily as they retrace President Madison’s footsteps throughout the house.
