The stone on the Large Dining Room fireplace was also found to have been reset when the ca. 1812 chimneypiece was installed.  The fireplace needed to be enlarged because the ca. 1812 chimneypiece was slightly taller than the ca. 1797 opening.  Evidence for the stone's original layout was found by looking at the iron cramps that held the stone against the fireplace.  Significantly, the ca. 1797 cramps were found to be small and carefully-forged while the ca. 1812 cramps were larger and not as well made.
