Because the Restoration Team knew that these studs had been used in the framing of President Madison's Upper North Passage Closet, it was decided to reuse them when the Closet was reconstructed.  Specifically, the studs with the shelf ghosts were installed on the Closet's north wall where they aligned with the shelf pockets found in the brick.
