After the closet was completed it was re-whitewashed.  However, the painters only applied the whitewash to the new studs and not the original ca. 1797 studs.  Because the Madison-era studs were not whitewashed, it is now possible for visitors to easily determine which studs date to ca. 1797 and which ones were installed during the Restoration.
