However, shelves were not the only Madison-era architectural features revealed by the rediscovered studs.  Two other ca. 1797 studs were found with areas of roughly chopped wood that started at a level approximately five feet above the floor level.   Associated with these chopped areas were ghosts in the whitewash that appeared to show where trim had been applied to the stud.  What type of architectural feature could have created these marks?
