While the virtual models of the Mansion show red wash applied to the ca. 1797 and ca. 1812 elevations, the real Montpelier has not been red washed.  The Montpelier Foundation is currently continuing to study the test patches of red wash and would like to further investigate red washes in Virginia in general in order to more accurately interpret the red wash to visitors after it is applied.
