Sample SB-EX-16 was taken from the south wing’s eastern cellar entrance door jamb.  After the analysis was completed five layers of washes were found, two layers of red wash interspersed between three layers of white wash.   The sample included, starting from the first layer just above the brickwork: (1) white wash, (2) red wash, (3) white wash, (4) white wash and, finally, (5) red wash.  Specifically the sample was important because it proved that the red wash had been reapplied at least once and that there had been several years between the two applications.  Because there was a six to ten year period between when the Madisons sold Montpelier and when the stucco was applied, having multiple years between the two generations of red wash meant that the first layer had to have been applied during Madison’s time.
