To answer these questions twenty-four samples of the red wash were taken and analyzed.  The samples were collected from a range of exterior surfaces with a special emphasis placed on finding samples that were associated with several layers of paint.  These samples were important because by comparing the location of the red wash to the other paint layers, it was often possible to develop an approximate date for the wash.  Each sample was analyzed using the same method that was used for the paint samples collected for determining the ca. 1812 trim color.  Twenty-four samples of red wash were analyzed in the course of the project and seven of them turned out to have captured multiple layers of paint.  Of these, one sample, named SB-EX-16, proved to be the most useful.
