After the ca. 1882 chimneypiece was removed it was revealed that a large portion of the Madison-era stone fireplace surround survived behind the later chimneypiece. When the ca. 1882 chimneypiece was installed, the masons used bricks to fill in a space between the existing chimney surround and the new marble chimneypiece. These bricks encapsulated much of the historic surround and preserved it for over 100 years.
