However, the stone found by the archaeologists was broken in two pieces and one end was completely missing.  To repair the stone, mason Ray Canetti used threaded stainless steel rods embedded in a masonry grout to rejoin both the broken pieces of the original Madison stone and to attach a new piece of sandstone.  The new piece of St. Bee's sandstone was imported from the same quarry that President Madison’s father ordered his stone from and so the new section of stone almost perfectly matched the older stone.
