The answer, it turned out, was found by looking at the physical evidence preserved in the hearth’s setting bed.  To compare the stone with the setting bed, the Restoration Team placed a piece of clear plastic over the bottom of the stone.  They then traced the marks found on the stone using a marker.  When the plastic sheet was placed on top of the ca. 1812 setting bed in the Drawing Room, the marks on the sheet were found to be an exact match for the marks in the setting bed.  Because the marks matched, there was no doubt that the stone found in the cellar had been used as a hearth stone in the Drawing Room.
